What Maine weather does to an asphalt roof
A Maine roof works through a wider annual range than most of the country. In July, a dark south-facing slope in direct sun runs far above air temperature. In January, the same surface sits well below freezing overnight. That cycling drives the lighter fractions out of the asphalt binder, and the shingle stiffens.
Freeze/thaw cycles
The damage isn't from cold itself — it's from repeated transitions. Meltwater works into small surface fissures during a thaw, then expands when it refreezes. Coastal Maine sees more of these transitions per winter than inland Maine, while inland Maine sees deeper, longer-lasting snow cover.
Snow and ice
Snow load and ice dams at the eaves are the region's signature roof problem. Ice-dam damage is a roofing repair issue, not something a maintenance treatment addresses. When we find it, we say so.
UV exposure and seasonal swings
Long summer days put substantial UV on unshaded slopes. It's common in Maine to find one slope of a roof visibly further along than another on the same house — south and west faces age fastest, shaded north faces grow moss first.
Coastal weather and moisture

Does roof rejuvenation work in Maine's climate?
Yes, on the right roof. Rejuvenation restores flexibility to asphalt shingles that have dried out from thermal cycling and UV — which is exactly how Maine roofs age. It does not repair ice-dam damage, rot, or a failed deck, which are also common here. That is why we assess before treating.
What time of year can a Maine roof be treated?
